In this section, I go through the process of creating my spreads and display a gallery of all my work for the Winged Post.
In the sketching phase, I have a vague idea of what the visuals will be, and I use this time to also plan the composition of the visuals and possible infographics.
When making the layout, I have a full understanding of what visuals and content I will put on my page. In this phase, I make sure the visuals are eye-catching and the content is beneficial.
I added a timeline and a new, more interesting photo from a side angle. I added the timeline because Jarrett had taken an unconventional path to get to Division I volleyball, which was very important throughout his story.
One drastic change in the print ready version was the subdom images. Originally, I wanted to implement a collage, but having easily identifiable faces was very important, so I decided to have two larger photos instead.

Below is every Winged Post spread I have worked on. I briefly explain my favorite aspects of each layout.

Just like every photo story, this spread took immense preparation to make sure we had diverse and eye-catching shots. In this spread, we were very successful in telling the story of the track and field team's many talents through the unique photos.

I took a risk with Shaurya's dominant photo, creating an outlined cut-out rather than the usual complete cut-out. This allowed for more of the background to be shown, and the experimentation turned out as the final product.

We were able to feature each winter sports team in this photo story. We highlighted the captains' interactions with players outside of the sport (like team lunches). My favorite part of this spread is the "Captain" armband in the middle. It quickly draws attention to the photos and states what the page is about.

The dom piece in this spread was truly the stand-out. I love how the photo-illustration turned out and that we were able to incorporate a real photo instead of the norm of illustrations. The reset routine infographic being a circle was also an intentional choice, reflecting that "restart" idea.

We were ambitious with this photo story, and I believe we exceeded our expectations. I originally had two sketches — one where we followed the usual mix of smaller, larger, horizontal, vertical photos and one which looked very similar to this final layout. Because we were telling the story of a day, the more linear feel with this layout ended up being more successful.

We put together this photo story in less than a day, from selecting and editing photos to adding them to the page. Beforehand, we had created a sketch and wrote down the possible photos we could have in each block. That was extremely helpful as we quickly completed this page with already an idea of which photos to use.

The photo of Zoe was an effective cut-out, since I was able to maintain the pool background (very important in water polo) while also keeping enough space to tell Zoe's Apex story. Cutting out her arm with the ball was also intentional because her story was about being always ready to protect her teammates, and her arm up creates the feel that her guard is up.

I really like the white space between athletes in the subdom. At first, I was nervous about keeping this white space and wanted to add more colors and information to fill it, but I realized that wouldn't add to the story. In the end, this was a very effective use of white space, making the otherwise crowded layout easier to read.

We were able to feature a senior from each spring sport in this photo story. I especially love this spread because of all the bright colors but also the cohesive feel. It's a small detail, but the color choices for the headline also added to the page integration.

This was the first spread I worked on myself, and while I do see areas for improvement now, I can definitely already see where my creativity came out in this spread. With the photo of Kaleb, I wanted to create the illusion that he's about to run out of the page, and the small part of his hand sticking out does create that without being distracting or blocking the text.

I'm very proud of how the column on this page turned out. Often, the columns can be forgotten behind the dom and subdom pieces, but the real photos of the watches in the column create a more engaging design.

In this first spread I worked on, I learned the importance of intentional design. We changed the photos to black and white because it creates a more dampened and quiet mood — exactly the story we were reflecting in the photos.
